Most of my patients come with a wide array of symptoms and concerns that have developed over time. They haven’t felt good for a while and sometimes they are at death’s door. Medical intervention has not given them answers and they have been told it’s “all in their head” because traditional blood work and tests all come back “normal”.
Over the years, they have been given several diagnoses and pharmaceuticals to manage their symptoms, but doctors have not looked for an underlying cause for their declining health. They feel unseen, unheard, and feel guilty.
I believe your body was designed to heal and regenerate when the obstacles to health have been removed. It takes planning, strategic effort and time to work through the process of healing, but your health can be restored.
In the same way a derelict home is restored, recovering your health will require a thorough & honest evaluation, a plan of action, the right tools, some clean up, and an unrelenting effort. With each step forward you will be rebuilding a stronger, healthier version of yourself.
Remove - Rebuild - Restore
Each step of your journey to health will take time. Phases can take a few months up to 2, 3 or even 4 years to complete. Our attention to detail, a lot of patience and a steady effort will pay off with your health restored.
You did not get sick in a day and you will not get well in a day.
There is no magic pill I can give you to make it faster or easier because there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Like a home remodel, we cannot fix everything at the same time, but together we will take things one step at a time.
Step #1: Make an honest & thorough assessment
I usually find there are interconnecting layers of illness & disease contributing to chronic illness. We need to identify your layers by gathering data which we will use to build a roadmap for your recovery. This will include:
Step #2: Make a plan & build a roadmap.
With the data we gather, we will build a plan to remove any obstacles to your health. I will prioritize treatment protocols starting with the most acute issues and moving through others one at a time. Our plan will include:
Step #3: Stabilize foundations, remove obstacles, & repair systems
Obstacles to your healing include infections, toxins, and environmental stressors. Each phase of your treatment will address these and will require your participation. You will be:
Sometimes you will feel worse before you feel better. As we remove some obstacles, others may show up and we will need to address them during this step.
Step #4: Optimizing Health
Once we have removed obstacles and repaired your systems we will no longer be treating disease. Our work will shift to optimizing your overall health and energy levels. This will include:
There is a lot of work you must do to ensure success in recovering your health. I will do all I can to give you a sound roadmap to recovery, but your participation is critical.
It probably doesn’t surprise you that there are many factors contributing to your illness. It has been well documented that unhealthy habits in these areas create the foundation for a host of chronic illnesses.
During the course of your treatment, I will be asking you to evaluate these stressors in your life and make changes to support your healing.
DIET
The average American diet is full of grains, sugar, glutamates, and seed oils. Food additives have been designed to build your addiction to these foods so you keep coming back for more. They are readily available, cheap, and deeply ingrained in our culture. These ingredients have been shown by many studies to be a heavy contributor to chronic illness.
PHYSICAL & SOCIAL INACTIVITY
Our not-so-distant ancestors spent their days working around the farm and spending time with their community. Days were filled with physical activity and evenings were given to time with family for rest and recovery. Chronic illness was a rare occurrence.
On average, Americans spend 55% of their day being sedentary, not including time for sleep, and only 34 minutes per day interacting face-to-face with another person. The ramifications of prolonged inactivity and loss of social contact for our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing is profound.
ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSES
Chemicals are everywhere, work environments are stressful, our living environments contain unseen toxins, and difficult relationships challenge our sanity. Our coping mechanisms make us feel better for a moment but don’t solve the problem of how these stresses affect our health.
POOR SLEEP HABITS
While you are sleeping your body detoxifies, restores organ systems and repairs cells. These processes occur at different times throughout your sleep cycle so it is imperative that you create an environment to help you get a sufficient amount of REM sleep and deep sleep each night.
WiFi & ELECTROMAGNETIC EXPOSURE
Our phone, electrical wiring, cell phone towers, and our WiFi routers constantly surround us with electromagnetic radiation and humans are unknowingly extremely sensitive to its effects. The health implications are becoming widely known and there are a wide range of symptoms that can be attributed to prolonged electromagnetic exposure.
There is a personal cost to recovering your best life. You will need to make changes to your lifestyle of stressors that are sometimes hard to do, but I can guarantee the end result is worth it!
You will be paying for visits, tests and purchasing nutraceuticals (natural substances used in the treatment of disease or wellness) if indicated. Unfortunately, most insurance companies will not cover the cost of Functional Medicine, Integrated care, testing, or supplements.
Much like making a long list of repairs to a neglected home, long-term treatment of chronic illness often feels like there is no end in sight. You finish one phase of treatment and wonder why you don’t feel better. You move on to the next phase only to find that you are making more changes to your diet, your home, and your supplements wondering if it’s really worth it. I have many successful patients who will tell you to stay the course because the result is worth the effort.
A 20 year old male patient presented with severe fatigue, severe muscle pain throughout the body, unhealthy weight loss, inability to gain weight, flushing, rashes, peeling skin, frequent vomiting, and suicidal ideation. Only 5 foods were tolerated and the patient caught every cold and flu encountered.
All traditional testing and blood work looked “normal”. Vomiting was attributed to bulimia.
Traditional mental health counseling recommended. No other treatment was prescribed.
When I began treating this patient, I ordered a GI track battery and toxin panels. These tests had not been previously run. Tests revealed a Giardia infection, pancreatic insufficiency, very low testosterone levels, severe mycotoxin levels, multiple intracellular bacterial infections including Lyme, Bartonella and Babesia as well as other intestinal bacterial infections.
The most acute issues were prioritized. Giardia infection was cleared which resolved the persistent vomiting. Mast Cell Activation was addressed with pharmaceuticals until flushing and skin peeling were much reduced or eliminated. The immune system was stabilized and immunosuppression eliminated. Testosterone returned to normal levels.
This phase of stabilization took 1.5 years.
With these obstacles removed, treatment was able to move forward to mycotoxin removal and clearing the bacterial infections which took about 2 years. Throughout the process, more and more foods were tolerated. Patient was removed from a mold infested living and working environment. A paleo diet was strictly adhered to and well tolerated.
All treatment protocols took about 4 years to complete.
Patient has been able to gain a healthy amount of weight, suicidal ideation is completely cleared. He is currently active, going to college, and hardly ever sick.
